S House

Status – Completed 2008
Location – Co Limerick, Ireland
Area – 800m²

This reworking of a mid 19th Century Cottage required the complete reorientation of all internal accommodation. A non-original 20 year old extension was removed and replaced with a new family area with 7m high ceilings and an area of approx. 150m². The emphasis of the house was removed from the traditional front door and guests are now guides through a courtyard to a contemporary glass and stone entrance and into the ‘public’ area of the property. The ‘private’ area reverts back to the old part of the house comprising bedrooms, study, music room etc. Aspect and orientation and the need to maximise solar access to the interior, budgetary and site area constraints and the need to maximise the potential of the site and program were underlying principles of the design.
